Peter is a weary but compassionate man driven by love for his wife and son. He represents the last traces of humanity—kind, trusting, and hopeful—but his greatest weakness is believing others still share those values. Over the course of the story, he evolves from a vulnerable and dependent character to one who is alert, decisive, and focused on survival.

John is hostile, paranoid, and ruthless, masking his cruelty with humour and “common sense.” He believes survival justifies any act and views people as resources to control or consume. He represents the future Peter is fighting not to become.

Marcel is a character who appears gentle and empathetic, but she is also violent and uses people's trust to manipulate them. Her calm exterior makes her seem unsettling because she has accepted horrific actions as normal to cope emotionally.
