About the project: Set during the Great Depression, 42nd Street follows Peggy Sawyer, a talented young dancer who arrives in New York dreaming of Broadway stardom. When the leading lady of a new musical is injured, Peggy steps into the spotlight and becomes an overnight sensation. With unforgettable songs like “Lullaby of Broadway,” “We’re in the Money,” and “42nd Street,” this tap-dancing spectacular shows how, even in the hardest times, Americans come together to create joy. Based on the 1933 Warner Bros. film, 42nd Street debuted on Broadway in 1980, winning the Tony Award for Best Musical and running nearly nine years. A hit revival in 2001 reaffirmed its place as one of Broadway’s greatest dance shows—a glittering tribute to showbiz dreams, resilience, and the magic of making something beautiful together. Additional info: See the info attached. 1. Come prepared to sing a 1930’s song, a song from the show or another golden age musical. Please bring sheet music for the accompanist. You may refer to your sheet music or a lyric sheet, if necessary – but it would be preferred if you could avoid doing so. 2. Please note on your audition application if you are a strong tap dancer. 3. A dance audition will be held separately and by invitation only. If called, please bring tap shoes as well as regular dance shoes that will enable you to move. No sandals or flip flops. Bare or stocking feet will not be permitted. 4. Call backs will be held separately, and script sides and music will be provided. Candidates will be asked to sing a selection from the show’s score based on the audition character. Male Presenting; Vocal Range: Soaring tenor, C#3-A4. A young leading man, handsome, charming, with legit star showmanship. Must be a spectacular tap dancer with a soaring tenor voice and still believably play the epitome of a 1933 "Juvenile".
Female Presenting; Vocal Range: Character alto, Ab3-Bb4. Half of the writing duo of “Pretty Lady”; Assertive and personable with a seasoned Vaudevillian style. Must sing and move well and be able to play comedy with great warmth and charm.
Male Presenting; Vocal Range: Character baritone, C3-D4. Half of the writing duo of “Pretty Lady”; a true showman and character actor. Witty, wry, affable and genuine with warm intentions. Must sing and move well and be able to play comedy with strong vaudeville timing.
Male Presenting; Vocal Range: D3-Db4. A wealthy southern financier and admirer of Dorothy Brock; loveable but with an ego. He is easily swayed by compliments and affection. Must possess strong comedic timing.
Female Presenting; Vocal Range: Alto/belt, Ab3-Bb4. A brassy, archetypal chorus kid with a sassy yet endearing stage presence; knows the ropes and does not suffer fools gladly. A comedienne with precise timing, a larger-than-life personality and exceptional tap skills.
Male Presenting; Vocal Range: High Baritone, D3-Db4. Dorothy Brock's true love interest. Charming, good natured, and dashing; an old Vaudevillian performer who is down on his luck. A straight shooter and a gentleman.
Male Presenting; Vocal Range: Bari-tenor, Gb3-D4. The dance director of the show; Hardworking, skilled and a true showman by nature. Entirely likeable, fun and professional with an even-tempered demeanor. Strong actor with superb tap-dancing skills.
Seeking Male and Female Presenting singer-dancers; All gender identities and expressions welcome. Vocal Ranges: Alto/Mezzo/Soprano and Bass/Baritone/Tenor as needed. Seeking a mix of strong and exciting performers who are plucky, ambitious, fun, determined, poised, buoyant and showy types. Intermediate to strong tap dance skills preferred. Ensemble roles may be doubled as cast. Members of the ensemble may also cover principal and supporting roles.
