About the project: Stranger in the Night is a short film originating from the Virginia Screenwriters Forum. The story takes place in a 1930s sharecropper’s cabin in Appalachia, where a family’s meal is interrupted with a knock at the door by an unexpected guest on Christmas night. The screenplay is based on the biblical story of the Magi. Background: It’s a place and time of Depression and high racial inequity. Following DW Griffith’s film Birth of a Nation, the Klan has risen again in their part of the country. Thus, a mysterious nighttime knock at a door causes high tension to an impoverished family. Rate: Pay is $125/day. The filming is expected to take two days. Additional info: LOCATION: Primarily shot in a studio in downtown Petersburg, Va. One short, night exterior scene will be filmed with the Father and Stranger at a location TBD. A mysterious wanderer. On first appearance, he’s frigid, gray and sunken but he warms up to his hosts. His pale face fades into his white beard. Intimidating large presence despite his thinning stature. His best friend is his felt hat and a walking stick.
Protective of his family and suspicious of the unannounced guest. A man whose physique shows the effects of years of physical sharecropping labor.
Warm and kind. Compassionate toward the Stranger. A woman who's clearly known only abject poverty. May be asked to wear hair up in a headwrap.
