Violet tells the story of a young, disfigured woman who embarks on a journey by bus from her farm in Spruce Pine, North Carolina, all the way to Tulsa, Oklahoma in order to be healed. The musical premiered Off-Broadway in 1997 and won the Drama Critics' Circle Award and Lucille Lortel Award as Best Musical. Rate: Independent Theatre Contract $400 weekly minimum Additional info: PREPARATION: Please prepare one monologue of approximately 1 minute and 32-64 bars of a song which are appropriate to the play. Total audition not to exceed 5 minutes. First Rehearsal:5/4/2026 Tech Begins:5/28/26 Opening:6/5/26 Closing: 6/28/26 *Rehearsals generally run Sunday-Thursdays from 6-10, but designated days off will be set depending on cast availability and conflicts. Performances: Fridays through Sundays 6/5-6/28/26 Performances on Saturday 6/21 and 6/27 will be at 2 PM. All other Fridays and Saturdays are at 7:30 PM. Sundays at 2 PM. Additional performances: Industry Night Monday June 15 at 7:30, Weekday Matinee: Thursday June 25 at 2 PM. Directors are not accepting video submissions at this time. An Equity Monitor will not be provided. The producer will run all aspects of this audition. Equity’s contracts prohibit discrimination. VIOLET KARLFemale26-29 y.o.White / Caucasian

Mezzo-Soprano. Violet is a young woman with a facial scar who has grown up believing she is unlovable. Smart, sarcastic, guarded, and deeply vulnerable. She embarks on a bus journey hoping to have her scar “fixed,” by a televangelist, meeting Flick and Monty along the way.

MONTYMale20-24 y.o.White / Caucasian

Baritone. A confident and casually arrogant soldier. Monty is handsome, self-assured and charming in a hyper masculine way but masks deep insecurity with bravado. He initially treats Vios thicc. 20-21, Black. He’s beautiful. He is lonely. He is smart. A kind of Hamlet.

FLICKMale26-29 y.o.African-American

Baritone. A gentle, thoughtful soldier who is emotionally intuitive and kind. Flick sees Violet for who she truly is and offers her real compassion. Struggles to balance racial tensions in the 70s with his duties as a soldier, but finds a kindred spirit in Violet.

Baritone. Violet’s father is loving but emotionally distant, struggling to connect after Violet’s accident which he blames himself for. A man weighed down by guilt and grief. Appears primarily in flashbacks.

Baritone/Tenor. A series of no-nonsense but humorous bus driver who observes Violet’s journey from a practical, grounded perspective. Doubles as the Radio Soloist and the Waiter.

PREACHERMale30-69 y.o.All ethnicities

Baritone. A charismatic, commanding revival preacher who promises healing and transformation. He is theatrical, persuasive, and deeply confident in his own authority. Once believed deeply in his faith but has recently been having doubts. He is able to hold power over a crowd.

OLD LADYFemale40-69 y.o.All ethnicities

Alto. A fellow bus passenger during the first half of Violet’s trip. The Old Lady is blunt, observant, while unsuccessfully trying to be compassionate. A gnat on Violet’s journey. Doubles as the Hotel Hooker.
