About the project: Leïla, 39, shares an apartment in Ottawa with her father, who suffers from arthritis. Tristan, 25, is the manager of their run-down building. Recovering from addiction issues, he is housed by his aunt and mentor, Monique, the building’s owner. He dreams of reconciling with his mother, Isabelle, who lives with chronic psychological disorders. During a sweltering summer, Leïla and Tristan begin an equally torrid relationship that ignites just as Monique announces a renoviction—a major renovation of the building that threatens the future of all the tenants. Lead role (FRANCOPHONE). Sensitive, devoted, solitary. He is the manager of Place des Aubes and Monique’s nephew. Ambitious and determined to put his troubled past behind him, he stands out for his resourcefulness and business sense, but is haunted by his fractured relationship with his mother, Isabelle. Recovering from serious addiction issues, he has cut ties with most of his former acquaintances, leaving him largely alone. He finds an outlet in physical training and boxing.

(FRANCOPHONE). Ambitious, authoritarian, individualistic. Despite her modest origins, she has risen to the top of the real estate industry. She attributes her success to hard work and has no patience for laziness. She houses her nephew Tristan and offers him a job, but is determined to reform him in her own way. She maintains a professional rivalry with her ex-husband, cofounder of her real estate company, which drives her to pursue increasingly ambitious projects.

(African descent, Maghrebi, or Arab, FRANCOPHONE). Intellectual, unifying, charismatic. He (she) is another tenant of the Place des Aubes building. Of Caribbean origin, he was a political science professor in his home country. Since arriving in Canada five years ago, he has secured a position as a lecturer at the local college, but works at the neighbourhood diner alongside his neighbour Anick to supplement his income and support his wife and two children.

(Arab, Maghrebi, or of African descent, FRANCOPHONE). Serious, pragmatic, diligent. Leïla’s older sister, Myriam holds a senior role at a public relations agency. Polished and elegant in appearance. A mother of two young children, she consistently embodies seriousness and responsibility, but has great difficulty expressing her emotions.

(FRANCOPHONE). Stern, cynical, resourceful. She is the secretary of the Place des Aubes building. Hired for her pragmatic approach and severe appearance, she has worked at Place des Aubes for nearly ten years. Although she believes her new boss, Tristan—the owner’s nephew—is not cut out for the job, she has a soft spot for him and tries to shield him from protests by unhappy tenants.

(FRANCOPHONE). Frank, direct, extroverted. She (he) works as a cook at the neighbourhood diner. Serious and pragmatic, with a well-developed sarcastic sense of humor, she lives a few doors down from Leïla and Omar. Small Principal (FRANCOPHONE). Gloomy, grumpy, jaded. He is the cofounder of a real estate company with his ex-wife, Monique. He has lost interest in business and leaves the day-to-day management of the company to Monique. Unable to tolerate seeing her succeed, however, he regularly tries to undermine her confidence and discredit her in front of the board of directors. He feels empathy for his nephew Tristan, but is uncomfortable seeing him manage the company’s affairs.

ISABELLEFemale45-55 y.o.White / Caucasian

Small Principal. (FRANCOPHONE). Anxious, passive, introverted. Her youth was marked by mental health and substance abuse issues. At age 20, she married Martin and, a few years later, gave birth to a son, Tristan. After Martin’s death in a motorcycle accident, Isabelle relapsed into substance use. She nearly lost custody of Tristan several times, which pushed her to seek help from her sister, Monique, despite their strained relationship.

Small Principal (Arab, Maghrebi, or of African descent, FRANCOPHONE). Melancholic, empathetic, wise. Leïla’s father, he has lived in Monique’s building for years. He lost his wife, Leïla’s mother, a year ago. Confined to his apartment by arthritis, he spends his days cataloguing the various bird species he observes from his window. He and Leïla share a deep bond.
