"Poiesis" Short Movie in Search of Actors
Actors for short film "Poiesis". ONLY LOCAL TALENT WILL BE CONSIDERED. See more info below. About the project: Poiesis follows the story of a young artist who faces a central question: why create? When Marcus’ girlfriend asks him to make a painting for her, he is confronted with the dual threat of both compromise and despair. His anxieties come to the forefront, including his identity as an artist. In the face of temptations to subvert and give up the creative process, he wrestles with a desire to relent. Poiesis is a story about an artist experiencing many of the same issues modern artists face today. It explores the implications of identity, ambition, technology, and love—and how they relate to the creative endeavor. Directors believe this film will be relatable, down-to-earth, and thought-provoking. Rate: Actors will be compensated. Additional info: Directors hope to begin filming in January. The protagonist. A painter. Young man in his mid 20s, a post-college grad who is financially trying to launch his art career. He has a passionate personality that expresses itself differently depending on who he’s with—with his girlfriend, you see the best (excited and fulfilled), with his father, you see him despondent (the opposite of his girlfriend), with his friend Tracy you see him conflicted (swaying between despondency and vivid doubt).
Sarah is in her mid 20s, a post-college grad. Her disposition is gentle and kind, but also confident. Sarah is sure of herself. The way she talks is as one excited and enchanted by the good things of life. When she asks Marcus what he wants to do with his art, she is asking out of genuine care and support, girded by a belief in who he is. When she asks him to make her a painting, she does so out of her love for him. In this story, Sarah is the motivator.
Tracy is a young man in his mid 20s, a post-college grad. A painter. He is Marcus’ artistic best friend. An accomplished artist, we find out, he is confident and sure in his own ability to create. He is Marcus’ sounding board—the supportive friend who listens to Marcus’ struggles and insecurities. He knows why he is an artist and has lofty aspirations for himself—and he believes Marcus is his comrade in spirit. Because of his confidence as an artist, he has strong opinions on technology.
Serves as a kind of antagonist in the film. He wants the best for his son, but what he believes his best does not align with Marcus’s own goals for himself. Well-intentioned, Marcus’ Dad is willing to strongly assert his opinion on Marcus’ life because he truly wants what is best. He has supported Marcus’ art in the past (he happens to be moderately well off), but does not feel like he can patronize his son’s work much longer.
