About the project: The story: The partnership between a photojournalist and a foreign correspondent is based upon telling the toughest stories and, together, making a difference. But when their own story takes a sudden turn, the adventurous couple confronts the prospect of a more conventional life. Additional info: Actors will read from sides, available at auditions. Please bring information about schedule conflicts. Rehearsals: (8-9 total) will begin late December, incorporating a break between Jan. 3-9, 2026, and then continuing until tech week, Feb. 2-5. Attendance at tech rehearsals is required. Performances: Friday, Feb. 6 at 7:30 pm Saturday, Feb. 7 at 2:30 pm & 7:30 pm Sunday, Feb. 8 at 2:30 pm As with all Theater performances, this is a staged reading with minimal costumes and scenery, augmented by lighting and sound. A renowned American photojournalist. Sarah travels the world covering wars and atrocities. The play begins with her forced return from Iraq, following an injury by a roadside bomb. Somewhere between an adrenaline junkie and voyeur of violence, she struggles to reconcile her dangerous career with the idea of a more conventional life at home.
A journalist and Sarah’s partner in a long-term relationship and journalistic team. Tending to Sarah’s vulnerable state after her injury, James feels guilty at having left her in Iraq due to shellshock over the atrocities of the war. During the play, James’ hardness melts and he begins to question whether he’d rather have a simpler, more traditional lifestyle away from the dangers of war.
(Mid-50s) A photo editor at a news magazine as well as Sarah’s mentor, former lover, and friend. Having a hand in the proverbial “photojournalism pot” yet with a healthy distance from active danger, Richard introduces the couple to his new girlfriend, Mandy, a woman half his age. Arguably pragmatic and realistic, he delivers the troubling news that he won’t be publishing James’ work in magazine, citing the business need for levity in the current issue.
(Mid-20s) Mandy is Richard’s new, much younger girlfriend. Though well-meaning and compassionate, she’s a little naive, possessing much less lived experience than the others. Mandy questions the heart-wrenching careers of James and Sarah, baffled by the emotional separation they must maintain to withstand such work, as well as the inaction of journalists in wartime in place of helping the devastated. Fervently in love with Richard.
