Singing Audition for "Into the Woods" Show
The company is holding auditions for "Into the Woods" Show and looking for performers, please see the details below. ONLY LOCAL TALENT WILL BE CONSIDERED. About the project: Into the Woods, the beloved musical by Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine, masterfully weaves together familiar tales—Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood, Jack and the Beanstalk, and Rapunzel—with the original story of a childless Baker and his Wife, crafting a hauntingly resonant fairytale for the modern age. As each character chases a personal wish, they soon discover that every desire comes at a cost, forcing them to confront the complexities of longing, loss, and unintended consequences. This intricate fable delves into themes of collective responsibility and the moral tension between self-interest and community care, illuminating the ripple effects of individual choices on both human lives and the natural world. In this dark and atmospheric new production, these ideas will be further deepened through the inclusion of a spectral ensemble of forest spirits, transforming the woods into a sentient, ever-watchful presence Additional info: SHOW RUN: September 12-27, 2025 Prepare one of the provided music selections from the show, for the character of your choice. 24 roles
(minimal singing) A stereotypical storyteller, warm and inviting, with excellent oratory skills. Serves as a meta-theatrical voice and observer. *please note: for those familiar with the show, this production will NOT be doubling the Narrator and Mysterious Man- these will be played by two different actors
(Baritone G2 – E4) A haunted, mysterious figure who roams through the woods. Revealed to be The Baker’s absentee father, he symbolizes guilt, regret, and generational cycle of trauma. *please note: for those familiar with the show, this production will NOT be doubling the Narrator and Mysterious Man- these will be played by two different actors
(Soprano G3-G5) A young, earnest, but quirky maiden who is constantly mistreated by her stepmother and stepsisters. Dreaming of escape, she navigates between fantasy and self-awareness. She doesn’t quite fit in anywhere, and struggles to understand her desires, her voice, and herself. While she may look beautiful in a ballgown, she is distinctly uncomfortable and out of place in the finery. Vocally bright, lyrical soprano requiring both clarity and warmth.
(Tenor B2 – G4) A naïve but big-hearted young man who seeks adventure. Energetic, bright-eyed, and a bit simple, he often acts without thinking. Loves his cow more than anything in the world. Starts out young and innocent, but is forced to grow up rapidly over the course of the show. Vocally, looking for a clear high tenor with youthful energy and bounce.
(Mezzo-Soprano Bb3-Gb5) Browbeating and weary, Jack’s protective mother who is independent, bold, and strong-willed. Practical and anxious, striving to survive in a world out of balance.
(Baritone Ab2 – G4) A well-meaning, earnest, but also harried and insecure man who longs for a child. He loves his wife but often underestimates her in his adherence to traditional gender roles. Vocally warm, grounded, and emotionally expressive with genuine emotion; baritenor feel.
(Mezzo-Soprano F3 – G5) Smart, determined, and pragmatic woman who wishes to be a mother. She is willing to blur moral lines to fulfill her desire for a family. Probably works too hard. Probably smarter than most of the people around her, but tries to be nice about it. Vocally has a strong belt/mix with need, comedic talk singing, and almost lyric hopefulness with resolve; intelligent and emotionally agile.
(Mezzo-Soprano: Bb3 – F5) A young girl who is strong-willed, quick-witted, fearless, bold, and brash: she begins innocent but quickly matures, transforming from a proper young lady into a feral, somewhat cynical wolf-hunting woman. Her path through the woods parallels a loss of innocence and deepening awareness.
(Mezzo-Soprano/Alto F3 – G5) A powerful, morally complex figure. Straightforward and aggressive. The obsessive adopted mother/protector of Rapunzel. She is able to see the world for what it truly is and harbors deep wisdom, but is hampered in her ability to wield this wisdom against the weight of her pain. Not afraid to be truly scary and disturbing. Vocally demanding and versatile; requires legit singing, strong, powerful belt with mix, and sharp character delivery.
(Baritone B2 – F4)
Hungry and insatiable hunter who takes advantage of the weak by misleading and captivating his prey. A predator symbolizing danger and unchecked desire. Vocally seductive and complex.
Vain and charming, a disloyal lover who is always searching for the next new, exciting thing He represents performative heroism and detachment from consequence. Vocally smooth, charming, with a slightly over-the-top vocal style.
(Soprano B3 – A5) A loopy-but-lovely maiden who is sheltered by the Witch and terribly lonely. She yearns to experience the World. Fragile and isolated, her story centers on control, freedom, and trauma. Vocally very high, clear, classical lyrical soprano with sustained notes and operatic tone.
(Baritone/Tenor C3 – E4) Just as vain and gorgeous as his Prince brother, he is always chasing the newest, most exciting endeavor. Emotional and dramatic, also craving idealized love without depth. Vocally similar to Cinderella’s Prince; may sing slightly higher in harmony.
(Movement-Based/Non-Speaking, Possible Ensemble Singing) Milky White is Jack’s beloved cow and his closest companion. In this production, Milky White will be played by a female (or nonbinary) actor in a movement-based, non-speaking role. Experience with movement, dance, puppetry, and/or physical comedy is a plus. Milky White should feel both endearingly animal-like and deeply human in spirit.
