Theater Casting Call for "Black Butterfly" Play

About the project: A vibrant play that interweaves themes of love, tradition, and self-discovery with dynamic Afrobeat and contemporary choreography. Rate: Non-Union. Paid. Additional information: Production Location: Toronto, Ontario. Rehearsal Dates: February 28 - April 12, 2025. Performance Dates: May to September - GTA. Directors are seeking talented actors with strong acting skills and a passion for dance to bring these compelling characters to life. When applying, please submit a head shot, resume, and a brief video (maximum 2 minutes) introducing yourself and showcasing your acting, vocal, and Afrobeat dance skills by February 20, 2025. Subject line: "Casting Submission – [Your Name], Role [Role Name]". Selected candidates will receive sides and/or excerpts of the script to prepare for the audition.

Lead. Black/African Descent or Multiracial. Laide is thoughtful, introspective, and creatively cautious, torn between emotional depth and societal expectations, with a deep fear of instability. Skills: Exceptional monologue delivery, great acting skills, Afrobeat dance proficiency, and vocal dexterity in Afrobeat music a MUST.
Lead. Black/African Descent or Multiracial. Free-spirited, creative, and charismatic, Chiwetel embraces the moment and values personal freedom, resisting labels and societal norms. Skills: Strong acting and dialogue delivery, expertise in Afrobeat dance, and vocal talent in Afrobeat and AfroSoul music; guitar skills are a plus.
Lead Role. Black or African Descent, Multiracial. Description: Ambitious, dependable, and traditional, Timi values structure and stability. Though his love for Laide is sincere, it often feels transactional. He flaunts his affluence and harbors a dangerously jealous streak. Skills: Exceptional acting skills, mastery of Afrobeat dance, and outstanding vocal talent in Afrobeat music.
Supporting Role. Cheerful, encouraging, and a hopeless romantic, she always supports Laide and urges her to follow her heart. Skills: Exceptional acting, dialogue delivery, Afrobeat dance expertise, and vocal ability in Afrobeat and AfroSoul music.
Supporting Role. Laide’s Friend. Black/African Descent or Multiracial. Practical and focused on financial security, she prioritizes stability over romantic ideals, often with a touch of vanity. Skills: Strong performance skills, including acting, Afrobeat dance, and vocal talent in Afrobeat and AfroSoul; guitar proficiency is an advantage.
Supporting Role. Laide’s Mum. Black/African Descent or Multiracial. Compassionate, nurturing, empathetic but torn between loyalty to her husband’s ideals and her daughter’s happiness. Skills: Skilled in acting, Afrobeat dance, and vocals with a focus on Afrobeat and AfroSoul music.
Supporting Role. Laide’s Dad. Black/African Descent or Multiracial. Authoritative, protective, traditional, deeply rooted in cultural values. He sees his role as a provider and protector, valuing stability above emotional exploration. Skills: Strong performance skills, including acting, Afrobeat dance, and vocal talent in Afrobeat and AfroSoul.
Supporting Role. Chiwetel’s Friend. Black/African Descent or Multiracial. Charming, funny, supportive but often avoids serious matters. Acts as Chiwetel’s voice of reason, despite his carefree demeanor. Skills: Skilled in acting, Afrobeat dance, and vocals with a focus on Afrobeat and AfroSoul music; playing drum is a plus.
