About the project: An Eritrean woman is hanging clothes on her clothing line in 1993 suburban Canada. Suddenly, as she's listening to the radio, the news of Eritrea's independence is announced, her country of origin. This leads to a flood of memories filling her, from moving to Canada in the 80s, up to their present day in May 1993-reflecting on her time since moving from Eritrea. Rate: Non-union (unpaid). Eritrean/Ethiopian. Hanaa is an Eritrean woman who moved to Canada 10 years ago, adapting to her new environment while holding on to her cultural roots. Resilient, determined, and a hardworking and loving mother to her children, she navigates the complexities of her life with strength and perseverance.
Supporting role. Renette, a born-and-raised Canadian, is outgoing, expressive, and lives next door to Hanaa with her husband. Their friendship quickly blossoms, with Renette taking on a motherly role in Hanaa's life. Initially unfamiliar with Hanaa's culture, Renette is open-minded and eager to learn.
Supporting role. Eritrean/Ethiopian. Mohammed, Hanad's husband, has a job that makes him largely absent from their lives. His love for his kids is clear, but he shows it through spoiling them rather than being present. His strained marriage to Hanaa persists mainly due to their family and living situation.
