About the project: Synopsis: This exciting drama about the Puritan purge of witchcraft in old Salem is both a gripping historical play and a timely parable of our contemporary society. The story tells how small lies build and build until the suspicions of a whole town is aroused. Set in a small tight-knit community, personal grievances collide with lust and superstition, fuelling widespread hysteria. Arthur Miller’s timeless parable attacks the evils of mindless persecution and the terrifying power of false accusations. Additional info: Auditions will consist of cold reads from the script. A local farmer living just outside of town. A stern but prideful man, especially of his name and reputation. Married to Elizabeth. Hesitant in his actions, due to his affair with Abigail.
Smart. Wily. Cunning & vindictive. Reverend parris niece. Was once the house-servant for the Proctor household but was fired after the affair with John was discovered.
John Proctor's wife. A strong, virtuous & honest woman who may appear cold at times towards John, though she loves him admirably.
A minister from out of town, known to be an expert on witchcraft. A committed christian. Has a critical mind & is very intellegent. Becomes regretful of his actions as the hysteria reaches a fever pitch.
The servant of the Proctor household. Timid. Easily-influenced. Filled with anxiety. Afraid of Abigail.
The minister of Salem's church. Paranoid & power- hungry, yet self-pitying. Wishes to build his position in the community, even though many of the townsfolk dislike him.
The deputy-governor of Massachusetts & the presiding judge of the witch trials. Honest & diligent. Thorough, convinced he is right in his actions.
Sad. Devout but bitter. A strong believer in the supernatural, lost 7 children, with only one, Ruth. Surviving. Married to Thomas Putnam.
A wealthy & influential figure in Salem. Holds a grudge against Francis & Rebecca nurse. Uses the hysteria of witchcraft to increase his wealth.
An elderly farmer & friend of John's. Feisty. Known for his tendency to file lawsuits. He is eventually convicted after his wife, Martha.
A wise, sensible & upright woman. Viewed in a positive light by the community. Strong & steadfast. Francis Nurse's wife.
Another wealthy & influential figure in Salem. Well respected. An enemy of Thomas & Ann Putnam.
A slave of color from Barbados. Believes in voodoo, has a love for the girls in the community but is betrayed by Abigail.
A clerk of the court during the witch trials. Upright & determined to do his duty for justice.
A judge who presides over the witch trials. Along with Deputy-Governor Danforth.
