Jenna, a waitress and expert pie maker, is stuck in a small town and a loveless marriage. Faced with an unexpected pregnancy, Jenna fears she may have to abandon the dream of opening her own pie shop…until a baking contest in a nearby county and the town's handsome new doctor offer her a tempting recipe for happiness. Supported by her quirky crew of fellow waitresses and loyal customers, Jenna summons the secret ingredient she's been missing all along - courage. (Character is 30s). A soulful waitress in her thirties. She’s lovely but has forgotten that. Her dreams were tucked on a shelf years ago. Stuck in an unhappy marriage in a small town, she finds expression through baking unique and unbelievably delicious pies. Vocal range: F-sharp 3 to F5, mezzo-soprano Vocal quality: warm pop/rock belt with solid control over mix and vibrato.
(Character is late 40s-50s). The oldest of the three waitresses – irreverent, irascible, been there, made it back, and somehow kept her sense of humor. Quick with a comeback, her wisecracking exterior barely hides her warm heart. Vocal range: E-flat 3 to E-flat 5, alto Vocal quality: soulful, with a reliable belt through full range of voice.
(Character is 20s). The youngest of the three waitresses – socially awkward, loves an ordered world, has a rare turtle collection. She has spent too much time alone watching the History Channel, and has played Betsy Ross in 33 Revolutionary War re-enactments. Vocal range: A3 to E-flat 5, mezzo-soprano Vocal quality: character sound, ability to blend, belt to B-flat 4
(Character is 30s-Early 40s). A doctor with a genuinely warm – if clumsy – manner. Jenna’s gynecologist, new to town. Has a quirky sense of humour and a big heart. Strong mover, adept at physical comedy. Vocal range: B2 to B-flat 4, tenor Vocal quality: warm pop/rock belt with solid control over mix and vibrato.
(Character is 20s-30s, Guitar playing a plus). Jenna’s husband. Earl peaked in high school; his face clouded with broken dreams drowned with cheap beer. He is almost a talented musician and that “almost” has haunted him his whole life. Publicly, Earl is all charm, but privately, Jenna gets the brunt of his unhappiness. Vocal range: E-flat 3 to G4, bari-tenor Vocal quality: rock sound, with healthy grit/rasp.
(Character is 30s). Charming, irresistible, quirky. Kind smile, loves poetry, Pavarotti and puzzles. Tax auditor, amateur magician, does competitive clog dancing, and has played Paul Revere in 42 Revolutionary War reenactments. Vocal range: C3 to B-flat 4, tenor Vocal quality: character sound, reliable belt to B-flat 4.
(Character is 40s). The cook at the diner– a guy’s guy, surrounded by gals – brusque, unsentimental, but somehow utterly charming. Vocal range: D3-A4, tenor-bari Vocal quality: warm pop/rock, solid control over upper register mix.
(Character is 60s-Early 70s). A feisty, older curmudgeon with a hard shell but a buttercream interior. Owner of Joe’s Pie Diner. Vocal range: B2-G-sharp4, bari-tenor Vocal quality: warm folk/country sound, solid control over upper register mix
