LATINA/HISPANIC. Camila is a young Latina woman living in a toxic household; mistreated by her parents. While trying to find an escape from her abusive family, she ends up trusting the wrong person who takes advantage of her circumstances. With a desire to make a better future for herself, she's willing to fight in any scenario. Using this will power, she looks for a way to escape the situation she ends up in with Benjamin, her neighbor.
Benjamin is a deeply troubled man, ostracized by society and his family. Although he's very good at pretending to be someone he's not, his act doesn't stick and has been the result of his inability to truly fit in anywhere. His deep-rooted need to find a connection leads him to misinterpret Camila's urgent signs for help as an invitation... or at least, that's what he wants to believe.
This character represents the concept of implicit bias that is present within the police force. When the police officer first encounters the girl, his first instinct is to affirm that what she claims happened is true instead of tending to her visible wounds. Later on, he's easily convinced by Benjamin that everything the girl saying is false simply because of her history with abuse.
