"Carousel" Show in Need of Performers

Auditions announced for Theatre's 2024-2025 musical, Rodgers & Hammerstein's "Carousel". Seeking cast. ONLY LOCAL TALENT WILL BE CONSIDERED. Please see the breakdown below. About the project: This production of the classic musical will tell the raw and honest cautionary romance of Billy Bigelow and Julie Jordan with sensitivity and care in a way unlike any production you have seen before, in a powerful and moving theatrical experience. Rate: Paid roles for actors. Additional info: For your audition, prepare a monologue and a song selection, either from the show, or from a different show of similar style, each no more than one minute long. Provide sheet music or have recorded accompaniment on hand. A dance combination will be taught in groups; wear dance attire or clothing you can move in including shoes (character/stage shoes, flat heel shoes such as ballet or jazz shoes). Each audition appointment will last up to an hour long. If callbacks are needed, they will take place on August 13. Show dates are scheduled for October 18-27, 2024. Billy BigelowMale20-35 y.o.All ethnicities

Baritone - (B2-G4). Billy is a carousel barker who loses his job and spends the show searching for a way to provide for his family. He struggles to overcome his difficult past, and takes out his frustrations on the people closest to him. He has a rough exterior, but a secret sensitive side which he keeps private to everyone. He loves Julie deeply, and regrets the pain he inflicts upon her.

Julie JordanFemale20-35 y.o.All ethnicities

Soprano - (Db4-Gb5). Julie is a mill worker who quickly falls in love with Billy and loses her job to be with him. She is constantly at war between her head and her heart. She loves a man who she knows isn’t good for her, and she is torn between her love for him, and her common sense telling her that the ending will be sad. She is strong but gentle. She is sweet, but not submissive.

Carrie PipperidgeFemale20-35 y.o.All ethnicities

Soprano - (D4-G5). Carrie Julie’s best friend. Kind and caring, Carrie is engaged to the very practical, Enoch Snow. Carrie is the foil to Julie. Where Julie leads with her heart, Carrie leads with logic. Carrie makes all the “right” choices that make sense. Though she is headstrong, she is also a bit naive. She is very loyal to those close to her and cares deeply for Julie and Enoch.

Enoch SnowMale20-35 y.o.All ethnicities

Tenor - (B2-A4). Enoch is Carrie’s fiancee. He is practical and logical. He is a planner. He owns a boat, and plans to make a fortune running a business and selling sardines. He has his whole life mapped out, and expects Carrie to fall in to those plans, exactly as he has envisioned them. He believes in the American dream of building his success from the ground up, and living happily with a wife and several children.

Nettie FowlerFemale30-60 y.o.All ethnicities

Soprano - (C4-G5). Nettie is Julie’s cousin. Nettie is a self-sufficient business owner on the coast. She is the mother figure of the show, not only for Julie and Carrie, but to the whole community as well. She is warm and loving; a figure of strength for all.

Jigger CraiginMale20-50 y.o.All ethnicities

Baritone - (C2-D4). Jigger is a no-good scalawag. When he wants something, he takes it, even if it doesn’t belong to him, whether it be money or women. He is a friend and bad-influence to Billy.

Louise BigelowFemale18-19 y.o.All ethnicities

Non-singing. Louise is Julie and Billy’s 15 year old daughter. She has had a rough life. Her father’s negative legacy has left her the outcast of the town. She is mocked by her peers, and looked down on by society. She is deeply insecure and lonely, but she is not hopeless.

StarkeeperFemale40-70 y.o.All ethnicities

Non-singing. The Starkeeper is the heavenly judge looking over Billy throughout the performance. In the end, Billy must face his actions in the backyard of Heaven, and the Starkeeper is the wise, friendly, but stern judge who forces him to look back on his life and take accountability for his mistakes.

Mrs. MullinsFemale35-60 y.o.All ethnicities

Non-singing. Mrs. Mullins is the owner of the Carousel. She hires Billy in the opening number at the expense of some unwelcome advances. She is a bitter and possessive woman. She wants Billy to be her lover, despite the clearly uncomfortable way this makes him feel. She uses money to help manipulate others.
