Protagonist He is loyal to a fault, and has spent most of his life in service to the family farm. This is the first time in his life he’s trying to do something for himself and break from the mold of his upbringing. He’s a country boy through and through. Capable of heavy drinking and heavy working. As he becomes “possessed” by the Nonsanto chemicals, he becomes a black mirror of his personality, embracing the deepest hate - and desires, hidden within his mind. Body Type: Fit (farm boy)
He has worked the land his entire life. He sees this tradition of hard work and country living as the most valuable thing he has to pass down to his son, Carson. It’s all he has, and when he finds out that Carson plans to abandon the family business and move away, he sees it as a deep betrayal. He tells himself that his desperation to keep the farm going is an act of selflessness - his son is naive and will come to appreciate this boon.
She is a farm girl who has lived her whole life on her father’s (Nelson) farm. Her father has been lifetime business partners with Dale, Carson’s father, and as such, her and Carson have spent most of their childhood in close proximity. She is in love with him, but he has always kept her at arm's length. She never fit in at school, a life of countryside isolation left her socially awkward and this reputation has deeply warped her self-esteem (and her sense of reality).
He has worked the land his entire life, with his business partner, Dale. They love each other, and over the hard years of commercialized farming, it is only their ability to depend on one another that has kept their farms afloat. Similar to Dale, Nelson sees himself as an extension of the soil - a native to the countryside. He’s made sure to instill this same understanding in his daughter, Rachel. But his hope is growing thin. He hopes that Dale can find them a way out of it, one last time.
She is in love with Carson, and is eager to build a new life with him in the city. Away from the hardship and loneliness that has surrounded him throughout childhood. She gives him much needed structure and encouragement, and is the only person in his life that has inspired him to work towards a better way of living. Carson would die for her, and she knows this. They are best friends.
