"Once on This Island" Show Seeks Performers

About the project: Once on this Island is a fable of love and loss, community and connection, set against the backdrop of class struggle and one girl’s journey to find her place in the world. Ti Moune, a peasant girl, rescues and falls in love with a wealthy boy, Daniel, from the other side of her island. To save his life, she makes a terrible deal with the gods of her world who like to play games with humanity. When Daniel returns to his life of wealth and privilege, Ti Moune sets out to find him to prove to the gods that her capacity for unconditional love is stronger than the will of Death itself. Additional info: Auditions will consist of singing 16 bars of your choosing from a musical in the style of the show. Please choose 2 contrasting songs as you may be asked to sing both, but it is imperative that you keep it to only 16 bars (about a minute). You are free to use songs from the show, as well, if you like. An accompanist will be provided or you can bring your own tracks to use. Any chosen tracks will need to be backing tracks only with no other voices. You may not sing acapella. Some dancers may be asked to stay after for a more elaborate dance audition combination. Please wear something comfortable to dance in that will not get in the way of your movements – Please do not wear jeans to the dance call. A dancing audition is required for all performers. Auditioners will need to bring jazz shoes. If you don’t own jazz or ballet shoes, please bring comfortable sneaker-type shoes you’re able to move in. Callbacks will be in person on Tuesday, February 21st by invitation only from 7:00 pm to 10 pm The production is scheduled to open Friday, May 19, 2023, and close on Sunday, June 18, 2023. Female Presenting; Ti Moune’s adoptive mother, with a strong belief in the gods. She is fearful of social status and greatly protective of her family. Peasant, wife to Toton Julian. Alto, vocal range Gb3-B4.
Male Presenting; Ti Moune’s adoptive father. Filled with courage that is fueled by the love for his wife and daughter. Peasant farmer, husband to Mama Euralie. Baritone, vocal range G3-E4.
Female Presenting; The story’s protagonist. A peasant girl who has been adopted, she is a dark skinned island girl with much curiosity and energy. Earnest and romantic. Has a genuine heart and joyful spirit. Falls tragically in love with Daniel and makes a promise to the gods to save his life. High belt, vocal range G3-E5.
Male Presenting; A youthful man, and the romantic lead from the wealthy part of the island. Struggles with his feelings for Ti Moune after she saves his life. He is pale skinned and inherently bound to fulfill the expectations of his higher social class. Tenor, vocal range C#3-F#4.
Male Presenting; A wealthy Beauxhomme, he is the careless Frenchman who came to the island. He leaves behind a terrible curse. He also plays Daniel’s father. Baritone
Female Presenting; A wealthy Beauxhomme, she is the well-to-do fiance of Daniel Beauxhomme and a great dancer. She will also play Armand Beauxhomme’s wife. Mezzo.
Any Gender Presenting; A god and the sly demon of death. He is proud and sly. His menacing ways are often a cause of distress, as he is in control of life and death. Tenor, vocal range C3-G4.
Female Presenting; The Mother of Earth. A great warm presence with an amazing belt and a great sense of humor. She is very caring and nurturing. Her motherly disposition makes her well-suited to provide inhabitants with anything they need. Mezzo/Soprano, vocal range A3-E5
Any Gender Presenting; The God of Water. He guides Ti Moune and provides the place where Daniel and Ti Moune meet. He is strong, clever, and compassionate. Enjoys playing with the rain and ocean. Baritone, vocal range B2-E4.
Female Presenting; The Goddess of Love, beautiful and elegant with a strong belief in the power of love. She has a sympathetic heart. Soprano, vocal range A3-C#5.
