About the project: Synopsis: Based on the 1971 cult classic film, Harold and Maude is subtitled “An Intimate Musical.” Although it has a large cast of characters, it employs only 5 actors: Harold, Maude, Harold’s mother, Mrs. Chasen, and one man and one woman who play all the other roles. Harold and Maude is the offbeat life affirming story of the May-December love relationship between octogenarian Maude and 20-year-old Harold. Although the basic story is the same and the writers have kept a lot of the dark humor of the film, this version attempts to dig deeper into the character of Maude and the impact of the love affair upon her, as well as Harold. They are, as she sings in one of the songs,“strolling along two sides of a river- a river known as time.” Additional info: The ages are the characters’ ages and not necessarily the ages of the actors. Auditions will consist of reading scenes from the show, in addition to the music auditions. Call backs, if necessary, will be on Monday, November 7th. Performance dates: Friday and Saturday January 13, 14, 20, 21, 27, 28 - 8:00PM Sunday January 15, 22, 29 - 2:00PM NOTE: this production is strongly committed to diversity and inclusion. As such, directors welcome and encourage performers of all races and ethnicities to audition for all parts in Harold and Maude. Talent is talent! All wishing to audition must show proof of COVID vaccination upon entering the building and must show proof of vaccination. Company will follow COVID protocols recommended by the Michigan Department of Health. The cast, crew, and production staff for this show are maximally vaccinated as well. (Age 80): A true force of nature and affirmation of living life to its fullest. Her philosophy and her beliefs make perfect sense to her. Her mission is to teach Harold to both live and celebrate life on his own terms, just as she as done. Audition Songs: Round and Round and The Chance to Sing.
(Age 20): Odd and introverted when we first meet him is described as being like Edward Scissorhands and a gentle traveler from another world. It’s through his relationship with Maude that he learns to embrace life and to trust other people. Audition Songs: The Real Thing and Harold and Maude.
Self-absorbed and self-involved. Unable to see and hear her son, Harold, and all that he has to say. She both is unflappable and unmoved regarding his fake suicide attempts. Vain, refined, elegant, and fashion conscious. She believes all will be resolved if she’s able to marry off Harold. Audition Song: The Most Popular Boy.
