A walking ray of sunshine. Full of life, love, and a wild spirit unafraid to fight for what she believes in. Maria is incredibly good-hearted. She tries her best at everything that comes her way- be it as a nun, nanny, wife, or mother. She wants what is best for others and is always looking outside herself. Maria’s humor shines when she is outspoken and blunt, genuine in everything she does, and charismatic to a T.
The loving but reserved father of the Von Trapp Family. Starts the show as a hardened (though not unkind) man still lost after the death of his wife and unable to face his children because of it. Grows into a loving husband and father. Throughout the show, is our example of a person who will always stand up for what is right, even if he stands alone.
The loving and beloved Mother Abbess of Nonnberg Abbey. Part of her charm is how genuine she is- not out of touch with or afraid of the outside world, not holier-than-thou, but truly aware of those she serves with and what is best for them, without regard for their different beliefs or paths in life. Endlessly patient, encouraging, and genuine.
Mistress of Novices. A crotchety and irritable though devoted nun who does not see Maria as an “asset to the abbey”.
Mistress of Postulants. Maria’s biggest advocate. She sees her as a joy and a gem within the abbey.
Loves Maria very dearly, but does see that she doesn’t necessarily fit in the abbey.
An ensemble of very good classical singers to bring our Abbey to life with hymns and beautiful choral music. Some nuns will have solos, others will sing as part of the ensemble.
The 17-year-old telegram delivery boy who is head-over-heels for Leisl Von Trapp. He is charming and loveable, trying to figure out his place in the quickly-changing world around him. In the end, although he becomes a Nazi officer, it is Rolf who chooses to save the Von Trapp family from being caught by the other soldiers, and allows them to escape to Switzerland.
Georg’s fiancé for the first act of the show. Elsa has been raised to play her part in society- to marry rich, to raise the children to be successful and well-behaved, and to do what is necessary to be comfortable in life. Similarly to Max, Elsa is okay with living in the grey area between right and wrong because she believes there is “no way to stop” bad things from happening. Not unkind or selfish- but genuinely misguided.
A close family friend of the Von Trapps who acts as their musical agent and mentor. A man of high aspirations who is primarily concerned with his own safety and success, though not decisively evil or bad. Just content to go with the flow (even if that flow is not “right”) if it means keeping his reputation intact. In the end, however, Max does defy the Nazi Regime by helping his beloved friends, the Von Trapp family, to escape during the concert.
One of Captain Von Trapp’s neighbors, who is a firm believer in the 3rd Reich. Becomes very distrusting of Georg as they drift further apart in ideologies. Intimidating and unrelenting in his duties and his commitment to the 3rd Reich.
The Von Trapp Family butler. Professional and dedicated always.
The loving and busy housekeeper- The Mrs. Potts of 1940’s Austria.
