About the project: Route 66 to the Grand Canyon is an original, interactive family-friendly comedy commissioned to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the world’s most famous highway. It is a farcical, magical journey down the Mother Road, filled with laughs, local lore, and the legendary spirit of Northern Arizona. Inspired by the British tradition of “end-of-the-pier shows,” the play combines zany humor, audience participation, and heartfelt storytelling to explore what it truly means to “Get Your Kicks on Route 66.” The plot follows Ruth, a stranded traveler whose broken-down car leads her to Mother Road, a mystical embodiment of Route 66 itself, and James, a tow truck mechanic with a story of his own. Together, they take audiences on a transformative ride through the landscapes and legends of Northern Arizona. Not from Arizona but California. An actress heading for a new start, a new career path as a Park Ranger. A Today Person, too busy to say 'thank you' without time to take in the now. Ruth is in a hurry to get somewhere but she isn't certain where that somewhere is. A road for Ruth is a means of getting to a place not a journey to somewhere. Ruth needs to learn to enjoy the here and now, to be in the moment.
Jolly. A teller of jokes. A master of ceremonies. The mischievous 66 magic spirit. Ruth is written as the lead character but Mother knows she is the lead, after all the road is she so she is bigger than life. With Shamanistic qualities she embodies the spirit of dreams. Playful. Her actions can be big and bold. Always aware of, plays to/with the audience. Older, but a naughty child at heart, her presence must fill the space, making her age hard to define.
Optimistic. Tow truck guy, Mechanic. Local to the Southwest. With a wry smile of seeing humor in life, has an endearing charm. Became a mechanic because he likes to repair things. He is a fixer of broken things. Really he wants to work in a hospital but doesn't think that is a life he is allowed to have. Despite his strong appearance he is afraid to take risks.
