Etta is strong-willed and determined, but finds herself thrown without explanation into a feud between time-travelers and back centuries before she is born. She is afraid and trying to make sense of what is going on, but is sharp-witted and brave enough to try and mask that fear and gain the upper hand against her newfound opponents and-potential-comrades.
Nicholas is in his natural time and newly appointed captain of a ship. Strong and confident, he relishes the freedom he knows will come with this final job, and wants to put his past of slavery to the Ironwood family behind him as he is eager to leave his complicated relationships with them and his past life of time-traveling behind him. He is bitter about their treatment of him, but is well-mannered and fights to keep his temper in check to show he is the better person of them all.
