8 roles

MERYLFemale33-37 y.o.All ethnicities

Is the central character. She is the middle child from the father's first marriage and a complicated mess -- quick-witted, cynical, snide, sarcastic, anger just below the surface and all her other emotions buried deep below that. She is also exceptionally charismatic and yearning for intimacy and closure that we're not quite sure she'll ever achieve.

WINFemale30-34 y.o.All ethnicities

She Is the youngest of the 3 siblings from the father's first marriage, married to Doug, pregnant with their first child. Her emotions are always just below the surface and she's highly motivated to "keep the peace" at the family gathering. Win is an "every-woman" -- we often observe the crazy world of the Cotters through her eyes.

MATTHEWMale36-44 y.o.All ethnicities

Is the oldest sibling from the father's first marriage. He has a bit of a chip on his shoulder. Of the kids in the first marriage, he was the closest to his dad, which doesn't necessarily mean their relationship was a great one all the time. He has conflicted feelings about the entire family and covers a lot of his angst with bravado and sarcasm.

JIMMale33-37 y.o.All ethnicities

The husband of the middle child, Meryl, who is the central figure of the play. Their marriage is about to crumble (she's told him she wants a divorce) and this weekend is fraught with tension and stakes for Jim: his desire to convince her to keep working on their marriage, her pushing away from him, and all the challenges that come with hanging out with the in-laws.

DOUGMale30-35 y.o.All ethnicities

Married to Win, who is pregnant with their first child. He is a guy's guy -- a jokester, a bit bullish, not super in touch with his emotions, and not great with tact. He gets along great with Matthew and Jade, Meryl -- not so much.

JADEFemale20-25 y.o.All ethnicities

The only child from the father's second marriage, and the youngest of all the siblings. Jade is high-energy, upbeat, and completely in love with boyfriend Devon. She tries her best to get along with all the siblings, but has some challenges with Meryl (who she knows the least). Jade is also hiding a secret that is revealed during the course of the play.

GINNYFemale60-69 y.o.All ethnicities

The father's second wife, mother to the youngest sibling Jade. A bit flighty, but underneath it all she is sharp as a whip. Ginny was the one to care for the father as his health deteriorated and his illness slowly and brutally got the best of him (and in many ways, her).

DEVONMale20-25 y.o.All ethnicities

Jade's boyfriend who appears at the end of the play. He is goofy and charming, an excellent fit for Jade. Of all the characters, he is the least connected to the loss of the father, but he is no stranger to grief. Devon plays a key role in the final act (in many ways because he is an outsider, free of the family baggage), bringing valuable understanding and kindness to the equation when our central character needs it most.
