About the project: After a matriarch’s death, the women in the family clean Grandma’s attic and find love and old memories packed away, and in the process, hit tunes that trace the history of Black women, from the trials of the 1930s through the Girl Groups of the 60s to the empowerment of the 90s. Songs include “Oh, Happy Day,” “Mama Said,” “I Will Survive,” “Tyrone,” “I am Not My Hair” and “A Woman’s Worth.” Rate: Actors are paid and receive complimentary tickets. Soprano with belt, a woman about to graduate from high school. She looks 18 and has the feel of “the street.” Daughter of Simone.

Alto. Strong and full of anger, some of it later revealed to be a result of a childhood trauma.

Belter. Simone’s sister-in-law and therefore one of the Sistas. She’s worked very hard to be accepted into the family. She is spunky and full of life. She is a social worker.

Mezzo soprano. She divorced mother of 17-year-old Tamika. Simone got her doctorate from Harvard in African-American Music, and is a professor. She has the demeanor of an educated person, and sometimes gets a little know-it-all.
