About the project: Synopsis: When her “untraditional” memorial is selected to commemorate Vietnam veterans on the National Mall in Washington, D.C., 21-year-old Maya Lin finds herself caught between the angry veterans, an indecisive Congress, and her own fierce belief in her art. Is democracy about compromise and working together, no matter how painful? Or is it about speaking your truth even when no one listens? Immigrant from China and mother of Maya Lin. Teaches English Literature at Ohio University. Very protective of her children. Criticism is her love language.
Vietnam War veteran and former POW. A soldier turned DC powerbroker, he is always looking for ways to win in any situation. Does not believe he is racist.
SEEKING UNDERSTUDY. A renowned landscape architect of Japanese American descent. Grew up in the farming community of Central Valley in California and was forced into internment camps as a youth. Even tempered and a good mentor to Maya Lin.
Jewish immigrant from Germany. Arts columnist at the Washington Post. Jovial and avuncular. A firm supporter of Maya Lin but am friendly with Colonel Becker. He speaks with a slight German accent.
